01

Is the gum tissue actually the main cause?

Not always. A smile can show more gum because of tissue covering the teeth, tooth position, the way the upper lip moves or the jaw relationship. More than one factor may be present. An uneven line and a very mobile lip are different concerns, even if both are described as a gummy smile.

Describe what bothers you in ordinary conversation: one tooth looks shorter, the gum line is uneven, or too much gum shows when you laugh. Bring a natural smile photograph if helpful, but expect the clinician to examine the tissues and your smile in motion rather than design treatment from a photograph alone.

02

When is soft-tissue contouring different from crown lengthening?

Soft-tissue contouring reshapes selected gum tissue. Crown lengthening may also involve the supporting bone and can be needed to expose sound tooth structure for a restoration. The amount of safe change depends on the anatomy, not the size of the smile change you request.

Ask whether the recommendation is cosmetic contouring, restorative crown lengthening or a combination. These labels can mean different procedures and recovery plans. If bone treatment or specialist input is needed, that should be explained before you agree to a simple-looking gum reshaping appointment.

Does choosing a laser remove the need for other treatment?

No. A laser is one way to manage appropriate tissue; it does not move teeth or correct a jaw relationship. Gum disease, tooth wear and existing restorations may change the sequence. The clinician should explain what contouring can achieve and what it will leave unchanged.

Ask to compare realistic alternatives, including keeping a healthy smile as it is. Do not assume that orthodontics, veneers or another procedure must be added. If a combined plan is suggested, request the purpose, order and extra commitment of each stage rather than accepting a package name.

04

What should be agreed before the gum line is changed?

Agree on the treatment area, the intended change, the limitations and the review plan. Ask how the clinician will protect healthy tissue and judge when the gums have settled enough for the next decision. An illustration can explain a goal but cannot guarantee the final appearance.

If you already have crowns or veneers, mention them early. A change in gum position can affect how their edges look. Discuss whether existing dental work needs assessment before treatment, and ask what happens if the agreed cosmetic aim cannot be achieved safely.

How can I prepare for a gummy-smile consultation in Zayed?

Bring relevant dental records and a list of medicines, and explain any bleeding, sensitivity or previous gum treatment. Tell the team about a wedding, travel or other deadline before discussing a schedule; a deadline should not decide how much tissue is removed.

Gemini Dental Clinic at Kazan Plaza welcomes patients from Zayed and 6th of October for assessment. Ask whether your concern needs laser, restorative, periodontal or orthodontic input. The first goal is to understand the cause and a suitable sequence, not to commit to a technique before the examination.
